The 'Century Makers' book lists the Maclaren pushchair or buggy as something that changed the way we live our lives over the last century.

In 1965 Owen Maclaren designed and patented his prototype Baby Buggy. Owen had been a designer of spitfires during the Second World War so knew about how important lightness and strength were to those flying machines.

After a visit from his daughter and her baby on a flying visit from the US and their very large pram, Owen put on his thinking cap and designed a new invention - the baby buggy.

He wanted to develop something that was strong and safe for baby yet light and compact for mum.

The first baby buggy born in the village of Barby, Northamptonshire in England weighed six pounds.

Maclaren "Buggies" (umbrella strollers) are sold in over 50 countries and are still being improved today.
