National Literacy Trust Pushchair SurveyThe National Literacy Trust conducted a buggy survey in 2005 with over 800 parents, early year professionals and health workers as part of their Talk To Your Baby Campaign aimed at encouraging early learning. The main conclusion from the survey was that parents and carers would communicate more if they had access to affordable pusher-facing buggies and pushchairs. Over 90% questioned in the survey would choose a pusher-facing buggy over a forward-facing buggy if the costs were the same and 83% would like the buggy to be able to face both ways. The survey went on to say that buggies, such as those from Stokke and Bugaboo, that allow children to face the pusher result in an increase in eye contact and chatter between baby and parent. With 90% of those surveyed saying that their babies or toddlers spent between half an hour and two hours in their buggy or pushchair, then forward facing pushchairs mean that parents and carers are missing an ideal opportunity for baby to learn and help their communication skills. Talk To Your Baby is a campaign run by the National Literacy Trust to encourage parents and carers to talk more to children from birth to three. Source: National Literacy Trust - December 2005 |
