Pushchair Reviews: Bugaboo Cameleon

The buggy meets customised fashion. The Bugaboo Cameleon pushchair will grow with your child and features some interesting accessories.

With a spec sheet that reads more like a sports car's and a massive celebrity following it is easy to see why dads are drawn to the Bugaboo Cameleon. But does the new Rolls Royce of prams have what it takes to make your life with your new baby easy, or is it all marketing hype and spin?

We love our Bugaboo. We bought an i-Candy Apple at first but it was so heavy and cumbersome that we decided to spend a bit more on the Bugaboo Cameleon and it has been worth every penny. It is the best thing we have bought for our baby.

Though a tad pricier than it's competitors, my bugaboo is is just as much a part of my family as the baby that I bought it for. Worth every penny for it's versitility, style, freedom of movement, and even fits into the overhead storage of an aeroplane (once wheels are removed). Sadly though I will have to retire it, because my son is betting too tall for it at a mere 18 months. I do feel that very few babies woulkd fit in this pram at by the age of three.

Like many dads these days I spent a long long time researching pushchairs... I also hate wasting money, so as the wife and I would like quite a large family, we wanted to get something that would last. (The worst thing about wasting money is buying something because it's a bit cheaper, then finding out it doesn't do all the things you would like, so having to go out and buy something else, in the long run spending soooo much more) In short - this push chair is a dream to move, it is so adaptable, so neat to look at, and isn't as expensive as it first appears. You're probably paying £80 or so for stye (esp if you get a free car seat included in the deal like we did), but the rest of the cost is for excellent design and useability. The buttons you use to collapse and put up the frame could be a bit easier to use (it takes quite a knack) but being able to collapse it into 2 parts actually makes it much easier to put (and fit) in the car. There isn't really anything else like it that combines it's relatively compact size, with 'off-road' capability (anthing that isn't supermarket flat), and flexibilility (inc being able to have the child facing you etc). Overall it's solidly built, and a great investment, I know many that didn't want to stretch that extra £100 and have now ended up with pushchairs they're not really happy with.

With a spec sheet that reads more like a sports car's and a massive celebrity following it is easy to see why dads are drawn to the Bugaboo Cameleon. But does the new Rolls Royce of prams have what it takes to make your life with your new baby easy, or is it all marketing hype and spin?

Front swivel wheels, rear pneumatic tyres, maintenance kit, 5-point suspension, a 24 litre under carriage bag, adjustable handlebars, carrying handle, varying seating positions and the promise that it should last you until your new born is 4-years-old, the Bugaboo promises much, but at £599 it had better.

The bad news is, that just like Apple Macs, Bugaboo are never on sale either, so there is no point waiting to find a bargain. Pocket-lint has been following the price of the stroller for 6 months now and it hasn't changed once.

Get past the fact that you'll need to become best friends with your bank manager and in our tests the Bugaboo performed amazingly.

Coming with virtually everything you could possibly imagine, the Bugaboo took a few minutes to work out how to use. However once we had figured out how the relevant catches and clasps work it all becomes as easy as counting 1, 2, 3.

Made by a company based in the Netherlands the build quality is also exceptionally good and it sits up there with Volvo, Ikea and Lego for its ingenuity.

Get it outside and the Bugaboo gave Emily a comfortable ride both over tarmac pavements, grass and forest dirt tracsk. The ability to switch the handles to place either the swivel wheels or pneumatic tyres at the front allows you to get over bumps or ridges with ease however we found that it worked best with the pneumatic tyres at the rear.

Light and easy to manuovouer, it has a zero point turning circle, the Bugaboo was also easy to put in and out of the car, however those with a small hatchback should expect to either lose the whole boot or back seat in the process.

You can take the wheels off to reduce the size for even better packing, but if you are just popping out this can be just another pain when you get to the other end.

Lasting until your tot is 4 is the device's greatest strength in its versatility.

To start you get the pram element, which is lined with a machine washable fleece liner. For parents on a budget (well you will have to be if you opt for this model) it can happily double up as a Moses basket. In fact, Emily prefers the Bugaboo over the Moses basket we borrowed for her.

After 6 months when they've grown out of the pram element you get to install the buggy seat and this should then last you for the remaining 3 and a half years.

Finally buying a set of optional extra brackets (£35) means you can fit the MaxiCosi car seat to the Bugaboo frame. This means that once you've got your tot strapped in to the car seat you can then transfer them straight from the car to the Bugaboo frame, dash around the shops, put them back in the car and hopefully get home without any tears.

I am a great fan of the bugaboo. I was of mixed opinion about it before we bought it. Best decision I made. It is so light to carry and once you know how to put it together its great. I originally was going for black and sand but changed at the last minuite to yellow and black. Its funky and fun. I choose it for practicality. But I just don't like the whole celebrity status thing that comes along with it. Ah Well

Its definately worth the £££££
